Tall Oaks Farm Rambouillet Merino sheep who’s recorded history dates to the 12th century was controlled by the Spanish Royal families for 400 plus years. The Spaniards developed and engineered a monopoly on the Merino Wool Trade and dominated and controlled the commodity in the southern European market as their #1 Export for centuries. The fiber micron counts of Merino wool established a dominance as the softest wool to touch the human skin. England controlled the northern trade routes during the same era but had many varieties of sheep wool for many different functions.

It is very interesting to me how the Spaniards were able to prevent not one Merino sheep or ram to cross the Spanish boarders by law for nearly 500 years. It was not until 1786 that the French King Louis XVI convinced his cousin King Charles III of Spain to sell 318 Merino Ewes and 41 Merino Rams to his Royal family and ship them to King Louis XVI Chateau Rambouillet Farm outside of Paris which still exist today. King Louis proceeded to “tweak” the micron fiber count and wool to weight ratio to capture the magic of this rare and valuable species. Just a few years later in 1790 the first Merino sheep to “set hoof” on American soil were from Spain. Two Ewes and One Ram were smuggled out of their home country and landed in Vermont.

The most significant investment of time and knowledge was the breeding of Tall Oaks Farm  Rambouillet Merino Ram “Rambo” for which has 25+ years of recorded genetics. The four most valuable attributes associated with this expenditure are: 1) Must be under two years of age...2) Must yield over 20 lbs of wool per season 3) Must have a micron fiber count of 18 or less and 4) The Bigger the Balls the More Will Call...! One Tall Oaks Farm Rambouillet Merino Ram can service up to 50 Ewes. The high quality of Tall Oaks Farm Rambouillet Merino Wool is the finest in the world. All wool is valued, gauged, and graded by micron fiber counts. The lower micron number means the finer fibre and the number range of Rambouillet Merino wool is scored between 15-25 with micron 15 being the softest touch to the human skin. Tall Oaks Farm Rambouillet Merino Sheep develop a micron fiber count of 16-18 which has the highest versatility in the marketplace, and this is what we sell here on Tall Oaks Farm in Vale North Carolina.

We sell “Starting Hobby Kits” consisting of one (1) each Tall Oaks Farm Rambouillet Merino Ram and five (5) each Tall Oaks Farm Rambouillet Merino Ewes as a family for sheep must be paired in these minimal numbers for their natural stress-free instincts and organic health.
